La Mostella

prodotti details

The grapes for La Mostella come from our hillside vineyards of Ghemme where we have some 13 acres of Vespolina grapes. This represents a large percentage of the total of this rare indigenous varietal. It is the unique character of the Vespolina grape that gives this wine its character. The wine has no contact with wood, a factor which allows the strong character of the grape to come shining through.

Origin and method of vinification

Grape: 100 % Vespolina
Vine training system: guyot
Area of production: portion of vineyard of about 13 acres of our own estate in the area called Puncione, located in the territory of Ghemme
Average yield per acre: about 3,200 kg
Harvesting: hand-picked at the end of September and transported to the winery in small crates
Vinification: a soft pressing of the grapes is followed by maceration and alcoholic fermentation at low temperature, a further malolactic fermentation process follows
Ageing: no ageing but 10 months in stainless-steel tanks and 1 month in the bottle
Bottle: slender Bordeaux-style bottle

Tasting notes

Colour: brilliant red
Nose: vinous, with slightly balsamic and spicy peppery notes
Flavour: Astringent due the strong tannins but fresh and well-balanced, with a pleasantly bitterish aftertaste
Recommended initial serving temperature: 15°C-16°C, uncork just before serving
Food pairings: a young wine which accompanies a large variety of foods without very strong flavours. Given the strong tannins, it is particularly suited to slightly fatty foods such as salami, prosciutto but also lamb and other meats
